Carved beeches by the bridge

Beech trees are like elephants: one grey skin wraps the whole tree, and expands as the tree grows. This trio of trees is by the south end of the bridge (on the "Bridge trail"). Even if there were no dates carved into the trees, we can tell, from the varying width of the carving scars, which ones were made many years ago, and which are fresh. Of course, carving creates weaknesses in the skin of the tree. The large tree at the north end of the bridge is no longer recognizable as a beech, as infections have made its bark as thick and rough as any other tree's bark, and the tree itself is weakened from the damage to its vascular system.
